A Bulgarian phone number has given a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Dial M for Murder’ after it was suspended because all three of its users died within ten years.

The cursed number – 0888 888 888 – was first given to Vladmir Grashnov, the CEO of Mobitel, who died of cancer in 2001, although rumour has it that his cancer was linked to radiation poisoning by a business rival.

Next up on the cursed number’s list was Konstantin Dimitrov, a Bulgarian mafia boss who was allegedly shot down by a lone assassin hired by the Russian mafia, who were said to be jealous of his drug smuggling operations. Dimitrov, aged 31, was eating out with his girlfriend in the Netherlands at the time of the shooting in 2003.

The jinxed number was next passed onto Konstantin Dishliev who was an estate agent who also ran a massive drug smuggling empire on the side (is anyone sensing a theme here!) and the £130million drug trafficking operation was intercepted just before he too died, back in 2005. Like Dimitrov he was also gunned down whilst eating out by unknown assassins.

The unlucky number was suspended as part of a police investigation into Dishliev’s murder and it’s understood to be on permanent suspension and a message of “outside network coverage” is relayed if you try to call.

A Mobitel spokesman played the old ‘no comment’ line saying: “We have no comment to make. We won’t discuss individual numbers.”

Well now, there’s a way to dispel rumours!

The original mobile phones cost around £2,000 in the money of the day, today that would be worth around £6,000, They also weighed in at around 6 Kg, and had to be carried around in a shoulder bag. They were not much use for lengthy conversations either – talk time was one hour maximum, and often much less.

Back in those days much of the wireless technology was based on the use of valves (or as our American friends like to call them, tubes). Wonderful though they were (and still they are used to make the very best in audio amplifiers), they were bulky, inefficient, used a lot of power and could get very hot.

One day three very clever men who worked at Bell Labs in the USA (their names were John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain) invented the transistor, which was a relatively small device that needed much less power than the valve yet performed a similar function.

A little later two similarly gifted men (Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce) combined transistors onto a single substrate, added components such as resistors and invented the integrated circuit. Nowadays a single integrated circuit can have over 40,000,000 transistors.

It is hardly surprising that the mobile phone has shrunk incredibly and that its functionality has increased from that of a rather clunky telephone to one that incorporates the computational capabilities of what would have back then been expected from only a supercomputer.

As well as these developments in size reduction and increased functionality, another factor that helped the mobile phone shrink has been developments in battery technology. Although mobile phones consume far less energy that their valve based ancestors, they are still power hungry. Recent development in batteries includes rechargeable lithium ion batteries which offer standby times of a week or so and talk times of up to 100 hours.

More recently lithium manganese oxide batteries have brought further improvements and the latest developments include polymer batteries that literally can be folded up to occupy minimal additional space.
Although for a while there was a drive to make mobile phones as tiny as possible, to some extent that has been reversed with the latest models such as the iPhone where superb quality display screens and web browsing capabilities are more important that phone miniaturisation.

The Nokia N Series of cell phones has long been leading the market with innovative designs and components. The Nokia N8 is no different from it’s ground breaking predecessors, with a new camera, more functionality, and interactivity, the nokia N8 is an amazing device.

The Nokia N8 is a touch screen phone which has amazing functionality, from web browsing and social applications, to the 12 mega pixel camera, which can geo tag photos.

The hard part about reviewing the Nokia N8 is simply defining set areas to review, the lifetime of GPS navigation free with the phone is pretty cool, but the GPS also lets you tag photos, and the photos are taken with a 12 mega pixel camera, which also does HD REcordings, which are stored ona 16GB internal flash card, which can also be used to store music and videos, did I mention teh camera takes HD Videos? but yeah it also has Web TV, helped by the internal 3D graphics processor, which enables a whole new draft of top notch games.

I think you get my drift by now, the Nokia N8 is a hugely versatile phone.

The Nokia N8 is being hailed as the first Symbian 3 device. This is honestly just another OS upgrade, which simplifies some things, speeds up process, and the usual garbage which really doesn’t matter to the average consumer who never really needs to know the backend details of phones such as the Nokia N8.

One of the real improvements in the N8 is surprisingly the 3D graphics processor. While this initially doesn’t seem like much, it soon becomes apparant that the Nokia N8 is capable of much more than the simple Java games on most phones.

The Nokia N8 Web browser is also pretty damn impressive, with flash support, and easy touch screen navigation, you will find yourself always connected. The Nokia N8 also comes with the usual draft of social applications for sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

A quick note on the GPS in the Nokia N8, it comes with a lifetime of GPS navigation for your car, and walking. So for those who are thinking of investing in a in-car GPS unit, this could be even better!

Music wise, the Nokia N8 can play two days of music, thanks to great battery life and a 16GB flash card. The Nokia N8′s music capabilities are also pretty well versed, with sound equalizer, and Dolby surround sound capability.

All in all the Nokia N8 is an impressive phone, and will definately be on my Christmas list, but the Christmas list is most likely where it will stay, because like most of the Nokia N-Series phones, it will definately be arriving with a pretty hefty price tag.

It’s one of those facts of life, no sooner have you spent $300 on a brand new MP3 player or phone, than it drops to the floor, or gets a deep scratch on the screen. This leaves us on a constant search for the Best Phone Protection.

Currently your only options are a hard, ugly, plastic casing, or a thin cheap ‘sort’ screen protector. One is unweildy, the other only offers limited protection.

Fortunately those clever folks at Wrapsol have just released a brand new material called Wrapsol Ultra. The Wrapsol Ultra material actually came about by accident when they were looking for new adhesive materials, but soon turned it in to the best phone protection.

Despite the accidental discovery, Wrapsol Ultra has protected phones tested at 50 drops from 6 feet, and dragged along behind a truck at 35 miles per hour, and the phone survived both tests without a scratch.

This easily makes the Wrapsol Ultra the best phone protection on teh market by far, and hopefully we will see plenty more where that came from in the near future!

The video below shows how the best phone protection can help any mobile phone survive an extreme battering without suring any damage, and provides a clear view of your screen, with a surprising resistance to air bubbles!

If you are looking for the best phone protection, this is a pretty good investment, and could save you having to buy a new phone!

But this one may actually stand a chance. First things first though, the internet, one of the iPhones most endearing qualities is available in a html browser via 3g. Unlike the iPhone however the Blackberry Storm has no WiFi capability, a massive drawback for a device supposedly centered on the internet.

The next huge difference in the Blackberry Storm vs iPhone debate is the touch screen. I have to admit the storm wins hands down here. Blackberry are more than aware that the majority of its users like the keypads, it is what differentiates them from other phone manufacturers. So when blackberry moved to touch screen they needed something to make the technology yet again unique. I have to admit they excelled, Blackberry Storms touch screen actually requires you to press down on the screen for it to ‘click’, unlike the iPhone where numerous people complain about mis-spellings, accidental sending of messages and losing messages

Unfortunately for the Blackberry storm the vastly improved touch screen interfaces comes with a small drawback when compared to the iPhones more like ‘brush screen’ technology. When it comes to browsing the web I vastly prefer the iPhones smooth zooming, easy navigation and slick movement. On the Storm I found myself using zoom in and out buttons as well as struggling to navigate around the page effectively.

The Blackberrry Storm vs iPhone comparisson may be a close debate when it comes to the browser capabilities, but when it comes to music and storage suddenly things begin to look a whole lot better for Blackberry.

The Storm device comes with 1gb storage built in and upgradability to 16gb via flash. Ontop of that the Blackberry storm has removable and therefor replaceable batteries, great for both long journeys and replacement of failing power. This small but significant ability that is missing in most Apple products is a massive advantage for the Blackberry storm device in the battle between iPhone and Storm.

All in all the Blackberry Storm is a great device, whether or not it will live up to the name of iPhone Killer remains to be seen. Either way, both are high end luxury devices, so keep your eyes open to see who is victorious in the iPhone vs Storm Battle

The iPod shuffle became a big hit, but what if you could shuffle 8 gig of tracks with a feature that learnt what you liked? The Instinctiv software for the iPhone randomly plays tracks like the iPod shuffle, but unlike the shuffle instinctiv learns what tracks you like and which you don’t, slowly filtering your music so it will play what you like the most more often. This smart shuffling is always switched on with my iPhone, guaranteeing that as soon as I press play I get tracks that I want to hear! This is so far the best Smart Shuffle Utility for the iPhone that I have found!

The current Alpha model of teh ibuilt phone device can create a 60 inch clear image from 6 feet away, quite a feat for such a small device!

I do however get the feeling it will destroy battery life!

I do however get the feeling it will destroy battery life!

KETIS Eye Glass Display technology is a vast improvement over the nearest competition in the portable projector market, with apples I-Wear providing a much smaller 40 inch projection from a much larger piece of kit.

While it will be some time before KETI release the Eye Glass Display Technology for cellphone screen projection it is comforting to know that such fantastic technology is in the works and will soon be hitting a store near you!

Personally I would love a mini projector in my cellphone, itwould open up whole new avenues for outdoor and indoor entertainment, especially if this si modified with some kind of gaming controller, giving you full portable gaming technology with a 60 inch screen!

So how have they made a printer so small and work without ink?

Quite simply the pocket sized photo printer doesnt really print, it simply heats up special paper (Costing around $0.35 each) with special small heating heads. This works quite cleverly to release colored dyes onto the paper.

The paper, while quite expensive is also sticky backed and fairly cheap compared to conventional printing. The sticky backed photo quality provided by the pogo portable pocket printer will not just be useful for many people but also open up a whole world of mischief, take a photo, print it out and then stick it on an unsuspecting colleagues back.

The Pogo Pocket Printer is going to hit the markets on July 6th and will cost around $149 on release. This still seems a little expensive for a printer that only prints wallet sized photos, so it may not take off as well as they hoped. Fortunately many people like novelty, including your writers at Geekywood, and one of these is definitely on the menu, after all if us gadget geeks didn’t buy something like this who would?!
