5G iPod mod trades the hard drive for CF storage

We’ve seen similar flash memory mods for various iterations of the iPod family, like Mark Hoekstra’s CF swap, which spans generations one through four, but unfortunately we have yet to see anyone take on the 5G video iPods… until now. One apparently bored and crafty gentleman who goes by the name Tarkan Akdam has successfully replaced his untrustworthy, archaic, mechanical hard drive with a substantially smaller 4GB CF card (we suppose what it lacks in storage is made up for in peace of mind). Apparently, it’s not so tough to… Continue Reading»

Apple introduces iLife ‘08

As expected, Apple’s given its iLife software suite a refresh in the form of iLife ‘08, which Jobs calls the “biggest jump since we introduced it.” A bold claim to be sure, but you’ll soon be able to judge for yourself, as the whole lot’s available today for $79 (and, of course, bundled with all new Macs). Here’s the breakdown app by app:iPhoto: New to iPhoto this around is “Events,” which promises to let you more easily organize your photo albums, and the .Mac Web Gallery, which’ll let you publish

Apple updates .Mac

Apple unveiled an update to its .Mac package of subscription online apps today. Most notably, .Mac now integrates with the just-announced iPhoto ‘08, offering synchronization between iPhoto and a web-based online gallery viewable “in any browser you like” (we should certainly hope so!). Oh, and it integrates with the iPhone, too, via a new “Send to Web Gallery” feature on the phone that — you guessed it — will upload pics snapped with the handset straight to your online gallery. The synchronization is two-way, meaning that other folks… Continue Reading»

iPhone gets web gallery support - without update

iphonewebgalleryupdate.jpgIf you worked with pictures on your iPhone Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday afternoon, you may have noticed a peculiar change. In what might just prove the existence of Apple Elves, iPhones everywhere got a magical Web Gallery update; without actually updating. However, you DO need a .Mac account already set up for this to take effect. The last (and only, at the time of writing) update for the iPhone, version 1.0.1, was released last week, and didn’t include this feature. So unless this is some sort of Apple-exclusive timed update in the works, my Elves theory… Continue Reading»

New iMac first look is lean and mean …

New iMacApple announced the new iMac today. It’s not as boxy or ugly as it’s predecessor, thankfully. Dumping the 17” screen in favor of 20 and 24” models, the iMac is made out of aluminum, glass and sports a very thin keyboard that comes in wired and bluetooth versions, along with 2 stock 2 USB 2.0 ports built in. Under the hood? A 2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme processor with ATI’s Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card, 1 terabyte of storage space, 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0, and 1GB of RAM (the new iMacs support up to 4GB RAM). (Catching… Continue Reading»

Apple facing patent lawsuit over iPhone keyboard

It may be a little slow out of the gate, but Florida-based SP Technologies is now taking aim at Apple over the iPhone’s touchscreen keyboard, claiming that it infringes on a patent it has held since 2004. According to MacNN, that patent describes a “method and medium for computer readable keyboard display incapable of user termination,” and the company is saying that Apple was “willful and deliberate” in its alleged infringement of it. As a result, SP Technologies is demanding that Apple pay “reasonable royalties” for each iPhone already sold, along with… Continue Reading»

Hacking The iPhone

Don’t say you weren’t warned, iPhone fans. Even when the prerelease fervor surrounding Mac’s mobile messiah-phone was at its highest, security researchers were warning that it would be vulnerable to exploitations like data theft and hijacking.Last Thursday, Charlie Miller proved them right. In a presentation at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, a gathering of cyber-security researchers, Miller detailed how he had hacked and hijacked the iPhone by exploiting a vulnerability in its Web browser. For iPhone owners, the talk wasn’t as foreboding as it might have been. Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) had released… Continue Reading»
