For a few months now I have been in the market for a new smart phone. For about a year now I have been using the Apple 3GS. This phone is very functional, but boy is it slow. So the time has come to get a new faster smart phone, and it looks like it is going to be the Samsung Galaxy S2.

This article is not going to be an in-depth review of the Galaxy S2, instead I am going to give a write up of exactly why I am going to buy this phone, when there is plenty of strong competition out there, including the iPhone 4S.

To start with , I have to admit it just looks amazing. It is large, sleek and has a bright vivid screen. Not only that but the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass, if you don’t know what that is, imagine glass but WAY stronger. In drop tests, crush test, scratch tests, and more Gorilla Glass often remains unscathed even when the iPhone 4S screen has been shattered and smashed to pieces.

The speed of the Galaxy S2 is exceptional. while you can still be left waiting even on the iPhone 4S, the Galaxy S2 offers twice the amount of memory, and a slightly faster processor. Although, keep an eye out for different models of the Galaxy S2 on different carriers, annoyingly some are less powerful than others, and have different button locations. This is particularly important to remember when you are looking for Galaxy S2 cases.

I have held both the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S in my hand, and although the iPhone 4S is a HUGE improvement over the 3G, there is still a litlte lag when I compared it to the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Another useful feature is that the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a MicroSD port, so you can quickly swap out memory cards if you are a photography buff!

The biggest downside of the Samsung Galaxy S2 has to be the app store for two reasons. Firstly, I will lose all the Apps I bought for my iPhone. This is not a huge deal, but it comes to around $50. The second thing is that the android app store is not as large as the iStore. This means I am going to be more limited in niche applications.

In most other respects the Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4S are similar, there are plenty of small differences between the devices I could fight over, but a biggie is that the Galaxy S2 supports Flash. Something that the iPhone has still not incorporated even after years of consumer complaints.

The iPad, and a large number of other tablet’s have been around for quite some time now. The iPad definitely was not teh first tablet PC, but it has been by far the most popular. As the iPad and other tablet PC’s rise to popularity quite a few people are begining to ask why.

Lets start with the basics, the basics being what tablet PC’s are good for. You can use them to send the web, write short documents (You can write longer documents, but you really wouldn’t want to.) And of course playing games or watching movies. They are also fairly useful organisers, perfect for keeping track of your contacts, emails and calander.

But then you get to what they are not good at. Tablet PC’s have low storage space, and tend to be a little slow. This makes them poorly suited for intensive business or entertainment use. There is also the issue that you cannot easily replace parts if one part breaks down, something which is worrying in a device that runs as expensively as an iPad.

To be honest as much of a gimmic an iPad is, and as impractical as a tablet can be. I still find myself loving these devices, not because of what they can do stand-alone, but rather what they can do when combined with other devices. For instance if you work on the move then a dual screen setup it is impractical to carry around a second monitor if you work from two locations (or more). However anybody who has to use a dual screen setup for work knows just how indispensible it can be when you need to research and write. There is simply not enough room on just one monitor.

This is where a tablet PC comes in handy, it can slide in to your lapotp case with your laptop, it can be used to do your research and keep on top of emails while you continue to work on your laptop, and it is even more flexible than a dual screen setup.

Are tablet PC’s a fad or fashion, personally I think they are both. But that doesn’t mean they still are not highly useful as an additional accessory.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C4wNgnrXTY

I don’t normally spend much time playing iPhone games, I use my iPhone much more for business than pelasure. However I was at SXSWi 2011 and stumbled across the Traveller-AR iPhone MMORPG. This amazing game is going to bring a true (WoW) style space MMORPG to the iPhone, which in itself is an amazing feat, however there is a lot more to this game than first meets the eye.

The first thing is Traveller-AR is based on the pen and paper roleplaying game from the 1970′s. Since then it has had four decades worth of time spent being fine tuned by geeks around the world. That in itself is a huge amount of brain power behind the gameplay in Traveller-AR, and it has been well represented and supported in this iPhone MMO.

One surprising thing about Traveller-AR is that they have not blanched at the challenge of recreating the Traveller universe. Just to put this in to perspective, Traveller-AR contains over 40,000 systems and over 350,000 objects which can be interacted with. This expansive universe can be explored, traded with and/or attacked to your hearts content, but make sure you get a ship that is up to the challenge first!

The great thing about Traveller-AR is that it is a truly flexible iPhone MMORPG. You can do exactly what you want to do, are you an avid trader, do you love to explore new systems in your lightweight scoutship, or fight off hordes of enemy ships in a heavily armoured fighter ship?

With this great iphone game you will quickly become immersed in the action. Even better though, the deep depth of gameplay will make this game compelling for years to come.

While Traveller-AR has not yet been released, look out for it’s release date in the near future (Expected Summer 2011)

The original mobile phones cost around £2,000 in the money of the day, today that would be worth around £6,000, They also weighed in at around 6 Kg, and had to be carried around in a shoulder bag. They were not much use for lengthy conversations either – talk time was one hour maximum, and often much less.

Back in those days much of the wireless technology was based on the use of valves (or as our American friends like to call them, tubes). Wonderful though they were (and still they are used to make the very best in audio amplifiers), they were bulky, inefficient, used a lot of power and could get very hot.

One day three very clever men who worked at Bell Labs in the USA (their names were John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain) invented the transistor, which was a relatively small device that needed much less power than the valve yet performed a similar function.

A little later two similarly gifted men (Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce) combined transistors onto a single substrate, added components such as resistors and invented the integrated circuit. Nowadays a single integrated circuit can have over 40,000,000 transistors.

It is hardly surprising that the mobile phone has shrunk incredibly and that its functionality has increased from that of a rather clunky telephone to one that incorporates the computational capabilities of what would have back then been expected from only a supercomputer.

As well as these developments in size reduction and increased functionality, another factor that helped the mobile phone shrink has been developments in battery technology. Although mobile phones consume far less energy that their valve based ancestors, they are still power hungry. Recent development in batteries includes rechargeable lithium ion batteries which offer standby times of a week or so and talk times of up to 100 hours.

More recently lithium manganese oxide batteries have brought further improvements and the latest developments include polymer batteries that literally can be folded up to occupy minimal additional space.
Although for a while there was a drive to make mobile phones as tiny as possible, to some extent that has been reversed with the latest models such as the iPhone where superb quality display screens and web browsing capabilities are more important that phone miniaturisation.

I have to admit here, that I am a long term Windows user. However I think it is safe to say that I would be lying if I said I did not admire the Mac’s sleek looks and fairly nifty GUI.

Nevertheless, Mac fans have been getting restless over the last few months, with next to no communication from Apple in regards to a new 2010 MacBook Pro upgrade. Some users are even suggesting that it is about time the MacBook Pro was given a new look. This is not too surprising considering the recent Mac success has come about more by design than any technical benefits.

While there have been some alleged emails from Steve Jobs regarding the future of the MacBook, and the possibility of a nwe design, at yet we only have rumors. With any luck in the coming weeks we will however catch a glimpse at the 2010 MacBook Pro, and even if we do not get a new design, we should be looking at some pretty good spec increases!

I have to admit though, we cannot blame Apple for holding back on a new 2010 Macbook Pro edition, with the release of the rather costly iPad, the Mac fans may be rather short on cash for a few months. Hopefully though our finances will be in order for the release of the brand new MacBook Pro 2010

Needless to say, we did not know whether we needed to keep her warm or cool, whether to get her a drink or not, all in all we were a mess.

Which is where the new iPhone application comes in. This medical application gives help and advice on thousands of medical conditions, straight from your phone. So no matter what has happened, within seconds you could know how to act to save someones life. This application is over 60mb, so get it via WiFi if you can, but please do get it, you never know when it may help you save someones life.

If nothing else get this medical iPhone application so you can browse it when you are bored, you would be surprised what you can learn, and even more surprised when it comes in useful.

In the meantime however we were stuck with a girl who could not breath and did not have an inhaler, what should we do?

For this reason I felt yet again disappointed as apple released yet another superb product, this time being the iLife ’09. iLife 2009 is an amazing piece of softwware for photo management with some impressive features and astoundinly well thought out designs.

And while this great product has compatability with geo taggin on gps devices and improved events album management what really caught my eye was the Face Recognition functionality.

Yes after tagging one of your friends you can not only set iLife ’09 to tage every other photo with your friend in it with one of those funky Facebook style squares but you can also upload them to facebook tagged. This means that there will be no more labourous tagging of facebook friends, you can simply upload your new photo’s to iLife ’09, it will tag all your friends and then you can put them straight onto facebook, with the tags and the location.

This feature seems os brilliant to me that it may even convince me to take the plunge and by one of those overpriced incompatible mac things, or maybe not.
