Real Lightsaber Hits the Shelves

Real Lightsabre

Real Lightsabre

I have to admit, it is not often that I get readily excited by Geeky things nowadays.  I hate to sound snotty, but one of the key things about any geeky gadget is that it has to be useful to an extend that can be considered nerdish.

Most of the major technological releases over the last few years have just seemed a little too useless to me.  I mean, coffetable Internet pads which cost twice as much as a laptop with is five times more powerful, iPhones enlarged until tehy don’t fit in to your pocket, and ebook readers which require users to shell out more money than they would buying a normal version of the book.

Needless to say, I saw an article on Crave last night which caught my eye, and it was all about the Spyder III.

The Spyder III has already been nicknamed the first ‘real’ lightsaber, and from it’s futuristic exterior a class 4 laser is emitted, which can blind you, cut through plastic, or even set fire to your skin.

Don’t expect to cut man shaped holes in steel doors just yet, but I think you have to admit, having one of these babies sounds pretty cool in some ways. That is of course until you remember that any arsehole on the street can go out and purchase one of these lasers which could easily be used (in the wrong hands) to blind a whole crowd of people!

Nevertheless I am sorely tempted to buy one of these real lightsabers, even at teh rather high price of around $200.
